Mission Statement: This blog was created to connect people through digital media and to show how different generations can experience new media differently. New media meaning technology such as: Television, the computer, the cell phone, the internet, Facebook, etc. This blog was also created to raise awareness about places that don't have the access we do. Here you can learn about programs that are trying to provide technology in underdeveloped countries. Organizations such as, One Laptop Per Child. So we mustn't take our the access we have for granted. We need to realize there are people all over the world who would probably like to experience technology the way do. Here you can find links for Computer Tech support, a cell phone help forum, Top 100 TV shows and many more things. I hope you have a good experience with the Digital Divide: The Generation to Generation Experience.

What is the Digital Divide?

The Digital Divide is a bridge between people with access and people without access to the newest forms of technology. The digital divide is based on gender, race, culture, location, age, and economic status.

Who has Access & Who Doesn't?

It is very important that we don't take technology for granted. If you have decided to live without major media or can't get enough of it good for you. What if you had to live without technology? I am just saying we need to appreciate what we have. I wonder how people in underdeveloped countries would react to the amount of access and information we have? If they would like it or hate it? The point is that they should have the option to choose how they interact with technology.

70 Year Old Perspective on Media

Name: Emily Perl Kingsley Age: 70

1. What forms of media do you use? (i.e. TV, computer, internet, iPhone, iTouch, iPod, etc.) TV, computer, laptop, cell phone, radio, XM radio in car, GPS system in car.
2. Does “the media” influence your life? If so in what way? (i.e. my job, my relationships) Email; Pay bills; Keep me up to date on news; use Google for research for job, world events, information, crossword puzzle help. Can’t imagine life without a cell phone, tv, radio, email. I don't use iPod at all.

3. Do you think age affects your understanding of media? If so how? I have not gotten into use of iPod, Tweet, texting at all. Find no use for it and don't miss it. Don't do any media game-playing either. Maybe function of age. I never got into it.
4. Can you imagine living in a country without having access to media (internet, television, the computer, etc.) I can imagine living in a country without access to media for a while but in an emergency I would want to have it available. I would enjoy it on a vacation.

TV
1. Did you grow up the TV? If, so how has the television influenced your life? TV came in when I was about eight. It was a big deal. I went to a friend's house to watch. I remember the growth and development of TV pretty well. Has influenced my life a great deal since it has become my career.
2. Do you watch TV? Why? If not, why? If so how much? Yes I watch TV. I don't watch too much - mostly movies. Only watch late at night when going to bed or while eating dinner.
3. What about television do you like? Why? Public television, occasional artistic efforts or intelligent programming, documentaries, science, nature.
4. What about television do you dislike? Why? Sports, pandering to lowest common denominator of people's tastes, dumping down America, commercialism underlying all decision making.
5. What are your favorite shows? Masterpiece Theater, American Masters, Bill MOyers Journal, Nova, PBS stuff, Sesame Street
a. Why do you like those shows? Intelligent
6. Do you think television and the media is too dominating in determining society norms? Yes, the Star (celebrity) system has become ridiculous.

Computer/Internet
1. Did you grow up with the computer and the internet? Did not grow up with Internet/computer.
2. What do you mostly use the computer for (i.e. academic purposes, business purposes, personal purposes (email), etc.) I use computer for business (writing scripts) and personal (email) and online bill paying.
3. What websites do you use visit most often? AOL, Chase bank, Snood (game to fill time while I'm on a long boring phone call), Google, a little bit of YouTube
4. What are the reasons behind your usage of those websites? AOL for email, Chase for banking, Snood as above, Google for research, Rhymezone for writing lyrics to songs, YouTube for humor
5. Do you use Facebook? If so why? Don't use Facebook.
6. Do you feel your privacy is safe when using the internet? I guess my privacy is pretty safe. Don't worry too much on a Mac.

Print Media
1. Do you read the newspaper? If so how (online, print, iPhone/iTouch)? I read the NY Times on the weekend only. Print. Have it delivered. I like to do the Sunday crossword puzzles on paper.
a. Why do you prefer that method? It’s what I am use to and it’s tangible.
2. Do you read books? If so how (print or electronically)? I read lots of books. In print. Haven't tried Kindle yet.
a. Why do you prefer that method? It’s what I am use to and they are tangible.
3. Can you imagine a world without newspapers and books in print? No.

Blogging
1. Do you know what blogging is? I know what it is but I don't do it. I only follow one blog - that is the Sesame Family Robinson about the Robinson Family at Sesame Street because it has funny films attached to it.
2. Why don’t you read other blogs? I don't do other blogs because it would take too much of my time. I have a feeling if I started doing it; I would get caught up in it and would have no time for anything else.

School/Job:
1. Job Status (i.e. working, student, retired etc.) Work part time
2. What do you do? Script writer for Sesame Street
3. Does the media help or influence your job? If yes, how? Media helps me with research for my job - we are featuring science and math this year and I must keep up to date on new science attitude and information. I sometimes have to research specific information.

Changes in the Media
1. Is there something you wish you could change about any medium? If so what? I wish there was more opportunity for kids to be exposed to more classical music. We are so bombarded with rap/hiphop and crass cheap lowclass crap. It is a miracle if kids ever get a chance to be exposed to any finer arts and music. I wish there was more funding for a higher class of art and music education through the media as well as in school.
2. Worries? I worry about kids being able to interact socially when they are always plugged into some kind of electronic device. I worry about the pace of life being speeded up all the time as electronic media gets faster and faster and there doesn't seem to be time to just slow down, take it easy and relax.
3. Do you have any questions about a certain media or the media you wish you had answered? Do kids develop the ability to have a regular normal conversation?
